
A SHIP'S WHIM
2D METROIDVANIA LEVEL DESIGN
SOLO BACHELOR STUDY LEVEL DESIGN CREATION FOR A GROUP PROJECT
PROJECT GOALS
The goal of this group project was to create a small 2D Metroidvania using as a base the 2D Game Kit in Unity. We talked and decided about the story and which direction the overall map should take. After that, each member of the group had to design and create a level (or zone). In the end, all those levels were put together in order to create the definitive map for the game.
GAME PITCH
Nelle, a brave explorer, find herself stranded on an unknown planet after her ship broke down. She needs a new power crystal for her engine but, luckily, her radar indicates that there is one on this planet. However, she will have to brave all kind of dangers before reaching what she is looking for, the crystal being locked behind a temple's huge door. She will need to fight, shoot, jump and use other skills in order to collect the 3 keys needed to access the precious stone.
MY ZONES
For this project, I decided to create the first zone (or the starter zone) and the final zone. The starter zone is where Nelle leaves her ship and start her research for the crystal. Once the crystal obtained, she then would have to run back to her ship (the final zone) in order to repair it. After getting the crystal, she finds out her ship got moved away, and a big area behind the mountain where she landed has been revealed. This starter zone would become the final zone, with a much bigger area and lots of challenges, including a big monster who is apparently responsible for her ship being in another spot. Below is a picture of the final zone. The player starts at the right side of the zone, and has to reach the ship on the far left.

Note : The teleporters were bugged for everybody during the project, we sadly couldn't manage to fix them, hence why I have to interact with them so many times before it actually teleports me.
