THIRD PERSON ACTION ADVENTURE GAME SET IN A FUTURISTIC UNIVERSE

END OF MASTER STUDY GROUP PROJECT

CONCEPT

The player takes the role of the Reworker, a man equipped with a special implant that allows him to use diverse skills in order to get through Alta Vita, a futuristic city deserted by its inhabitants after a tragic event occurred. Those skills can be switched instantly in the heat of the action in order to adapt to the terrain and pass the challenges. 

PROJECT GOALS

As a team, we had to develop a Vertical Slice of a video game using Unreal Engine 4 within a year. This project aimed to give us a glimpse of what a real production in a studio would look like. We got through all the phases of development, including Pre-Production, Alpha, Beta...

MY ROLES

During the development phase, I had the opportunity to work on multiple aspects of the project.

  • GAME DESIGNER : Creation and writing of documents related to the game design such as the 3C, Rational Game Design, OCR Loops, Game System...

  • LEVEL DESIGNER : Sketching, Level Blockout, programming of an entire level, support in the same roles on the other levels.

  • LEVEL ARTIST : Use of different assets, sounds, textures... in order to give life to levels.

  • TECHNICAL DESIGNER/PROGRAMMER (VISUAL SCRIPTING) : Programming of the project (character's skills and abilities, programming related to level events...) using Unreal Engine's Blueprint.

  • SOUND DESIGNER : Research, mixing, and integration of sounds and musics according to the project needs. Usage of Unreal Engine 4 technology to create reverb zones.

  • 3D ANIMATOR : Research, integration, modification and creation of character animations according to the project needs (animations created with Unreal Engine's Control Rig).

LEVEL DESIGN

Like stated just above, I worked on different aspects in the project, including all the playable levels in the game. But due to a lack of time and other team members being busy on other tasks, I had to quickly design a 3rd level that would act as the final level of our vertical slice.

The power being almost out in all the city, the Reworker has to restart an old power plant. However, he has to quickly stabilize the turbines before the whole plant explodes due to a power overload.

 

Below are the sketches I made when designing the level, with screenshots during the creation in Unreal Engine. Originally, the player was able to complete it from the bottom to the top and top to the bottom depending from where he finished the 2nd level, but due to a lack of time in the 2nd level realization, only the bottom to top path was made available. In the end, the final version of this level differs slitghly from the sketches.
